RV Campgrounds, Campsites, Airbnb, & Hotels

Before you and your family, including your dog, set out for your great American road trip, prepare a list of potential pet-friendly lodging to prevent a night sleeping in the car. Unfortunately, not all stops that house humans will also house their dogs. Beyond the obvious pet-friendly hotels, you can also stay at pet-friendly campgrounds and pet-friendly Airbnb lodging.

An RV and a Dog, What More Could You Need?

If you have an RV, check ahead of time if your chosen RV park allows dogs, and if they do, be sure to study the rules regarding dogs. You may be required to keep your dog on a leash at all times or you may not be allowed to walk your dog in restricted areas. Some parks don’t allow dogs on hiking trails or boardwalks. Also, you may need to provide proof of a rabies vaccination before entering the park.

Camping with Man’s Best Friend

Whether you’re RV camping or campsite camping, KOA offers Kamp K9 where there’s a fenced area for your dog to run around off leash with seating for you while you watch. Kamp K9 also provides cleanup stations, fresh water, and in some locations, designated areas for large and small dogs.

Your Country’s National Parks & Forests are Pet Friendly!

If you want to visit a National Park campground, you can bring your dog as long as he or she is on a leash not exceeding 6 feet in length at all times (or in a cage or crate). Be sure to check the pet policy of the campground you choose. Some campgrounds only allow pet camping in designated sites. National Forest Campgrounds also allow pets as long as they are leashed and under control in the campground and on the trails. Some state parks also allow pets.

Airbnb, Across the Country & the Globe with Your Dog

If you’re visiting an urban area or if you just don’t like camping, Airbnb may have an option for you. Check the “House Rules” section of an Airbnb listing to see if they allow pets. Be sure to contact the host to not only double-check that the listing is still accurately portraying pet friendly but to also see if there are any restrictions. Once you find your chosen listing, click on “More Filters” at the top of the page, and then scroll down to “House Rules” to see that the “Pets Allowed” box is checked.

Let Your Dog Sleep In at Sleep Inn

With more than 180 pet-friendly properties, Sleep Inn offers an across-the-board pet policy versus other hotel chains that state it’s up to the individual hotels as to whether or not they’re pet friendly. The pet fees and weight limits do vary from property to property.

On the Road Again!

No matter where you choose to stay with your dog, remember to bring water and a water bowl, especially if you’re staying at a campsite where the water supply may not be easily accessible. Your dog will also need his or her food dish, a leash and collar with tags displaying your cell phone number, potty bags, and any medications your dog takes along with his or her health records and vaccination reports. Remember the toys! And enjoy your travels with your pooch!
